Comedy Songs to LOL Solo

As you are spending more time at home or alone, you still need some laughs. Here's a playlist of comedy songs for you to LOL solo.

Could you imagine social distancing in a world that didn’t have good entertainment at your disposal? Aren’t we lucky that we can take personal actions to help control a global pandemic? And, who would have thought those actions would involve staying at home and doing something enjoyable? Bring on the comedy songs!

Yes. We are bummed we can’t put on Big Couch workshops and shows right now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t share our love with you from a distance. So, we put together a Spotify playlist of comedy songs for you to LOL solo. We didn’t repeat artists, and that makes this selection really, really, really random! We could, however, find some general similarities.

Laugh So You Don’t Cry – Comedy songs like Adam Sandler’s “Somebody Kill Me” ramps up the post-break-up emotions so high that you can’t help but laugh at the desperation of it all. If you haven’t experienced heartbreak, maybe this isn’t funny to you. But, then, you maybe aren’t from this planet. See also “I’m an Asshole” from Denis Leary to laugh at stupidity and feel some moral superiority.

Silly, Silly, Silly – When you get a lot of repetition, you can’t help but laugh at a silly song. “Parked By the Lake” from Dean Summerwind includes the same words in different orders so many times that it’s funny, then it stops being funny, and then it starts being funny again. The earnest nature of the song, though, makes it slightly different from the classic “Henry the VIII, I am” from Herman’s Hermits.

Listen to the Story – Lots of comedy songs tell a tale, and we love to hear that narrative. Some of these have a folk sound like “The Scotsman” or are framed as a letter like “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh” from Allan Sherman. But, one of our favorite comedy ballads is “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” from 30 Rock because it takes the turn early, so the whole song gets to be absurd fun.

Let’s Talk About Sex – Y’all, sex is a big comedy song topic. Sometimes it’s real gross and not sexy, but sometimes it’s way sexier than you expected it to be. That’s probably because of the realness as found in “Business Time” from Flight of the Concords. For more sexiness, check out “(Do It In My) Twin Bed” from the women of Saturday Night Live.

That Wasn’t Meant to Be Funny – Some songs exist in the mainstream, and you can’t believe they were actually made and released seriously. We could make a whole playlist just of these, but we went with “Peaches” from The Presidents of the United States, mostly because of the line “Peaches come from a can. They were put there by a man.” That’s good comedy, y’all.

Imitation is Flattery – If song parodies are your thing, just go listen to “Weird” Al Yankovic. That’s all. It’s all good.

These songs and a few more are in our Spotify playlist linked below. We’ve put together over 2 hours of fun (that’s not safe for family listening, BTW), but feel free to tell us your favorites in the comments below.

Even if you use humor as a coping mechanism, you do it differently than another person. Real talk. Everyone’s different. Some will thrive and others will struggle with spending more time at home. We hope these comedy songs lighten your load, no matter how heavy it is.
