Desiree Wright and Patience Vanlow are two sisters who have different lifestyles. After a heated argument, Desiree says a passionate prayer to the man upstairs and as a result, the sisters’ bodies are spiritually swapped. This prompts the sisters to take matters into their own hands and sort things out as they know best.
Freaky Sh!t is a film by Tyelise Walton, who recently complete the MFA film program at UNO. This film is very special to her because it represents who she is as a creative. Her aim is to take an old concept and birth it into something refreshing, modern, and most of all, comical.
As a black filmmaker, she wants to avoid creating films that magnify black trauma or misrepresentation of black people. There are a plethora of genres that are rarely explored, exhibiting a creative and/or entertaining approach to telling stories of black existence. Fantasy films are a notable example. Compared to most Hollywood films, there aren’t many fantasy films that possess an all-black cast or have a black person playing the lead. Having this in mind, Tyelise wanted to create a film that includes this very genre.
Join us in a special film screening of Freaky Sh!t on Friday, December 8 at 7pm at Big Couch! Tickets are donation based going to the filmmaker.
